Amritsar Itinerary: How to Spend 2 Days in Amritsar, Punjab
Amritsar is a city that rewards you for slowing down.
Yes, you could rush through the highlights in a day—but to really experience it, to feel both its spirituality and its history, I’d recommend giving yourself at least two days.
This itinerary brings together the very best of Amritsar—at a pace that allows you to actually enjoy it.

If you prefer to see the shape of the trip before reading the details, here’s how I would organise two days in Amritsar…
Day 1: First Impressions and Evening at the Golden Temple
Afternoon: Arrive and Explore the Old City
Once you arrive in Amritsar, take some time to settle in and get your bearings.
If you have the energy, this is a great time to:
wander through the old streets
get a feel for the city
This doesn’t need to be structured—just walk and observe.
Late Afternoon: Head to Jallianwala Bagh

Visit Jallianwala Bagh in the late afternoon when it tends to be a little quieter.
This is not a place to rush.
Allow time to:
walk slowly through the site
read the information
sit for a while and reflect
Evening: Visit the Golden Temple (First Visit)

Head to the Golden Temple after dark.
This is, without question, the most magical time to see it.
The temple glows.
The water reflects it perfectly.
The atmosphere feels calm, almost otherworldly.
Take your time here:
walk the parikrama
sit by the water
simply watch what’s happening around you
Day 2: History, Culture and the Wagah Border
Early Morning: Return to the Golden Temple

Go back.
Trust me on this.
Visiting the Golden Temple in the morning gives you a completely different experience.
It’s quieter.
More reflective.
Less overwhelming.
This is your chance to:
explore more slowly
take photos
sit and absorb the atmosphere
Mid-Morning: Visit the Partition Museum

Next, head to the Partition Museum.
This is one of the most important museums in India—and one of the most moving.
It tells the story of the 1947 partition through:
personal testimonies
documents
lived experiences
I found it deeply thought-provoking.
Give yourself time here.
Afternoon: Heritage Walk or Free Time

Use the afternoon to either:
or explore independently
This is where you’ll discover:
hidden streets
architectural details
places you wouldn’t otherwise find
Late Afternoon to Evening: Wagah Border Ceremony

End your trip with the ceremony at the Wagah Border.
This is… unlike anything else.
Expect:
loud music
cheering crowds
dancing
intense, theatrical military displays
I found it slightly surreal—and completely fascinating.
Optional: If You Only Have 1 Day
If you’re short on time:
Morning
Golden Temple (early visit)
Jallianwala Bagh
Afternoon
Partition Museum
Evening
Wagah Border ceremony
It will be busy—but doable.
Final Thoughts
Amritsar isn’t a city to rush.
It’s a place of contrasts:
peace and intensity
beauty and tragedy
spirituality and spectacle
Give it time.
Let it unfold.
