2 Days in Jodhpur: A Slow Travel Itinerary for the Blue City

February 15, 20264 min read

If you’re planning 2 days in Jodhpur, this itinerary balances the city’s iconic sights with slower, more meaningful experiences. Known as the Blue City of Rajasthan, Jodhpur offers ancient forts, stepwells, rooftop restaurants, vibrant bazaars and royal history — all compact enough to explore at an unhurried pace.

This guide pairs perfectly with my full post on the best things to do in Jodhpur.

Day 1 in Jodhpur: The Blue City & Mehrangarh Fort

Morning: Toorji Ka Jhalra & Old City Walk

Start your first morning at Toorji Ka Jhalra, the beautifully restored 18th-century stepwell built by Maharani Tanwar Ji.

From there, explore the Blue City on foot. Only around 40% of the buildings remain blue today, but restoration efforts are reviving the neighbourhood’s iconic colour. Wander through narrow lanes, look up at carved balconies, and allow time for photographs.

If possible, book a guided walking tour — the architectural details and local insights make a huge difference.

Late Morning: Mehrangarh Fort

No Jodhpur itinerary is complete without Mehrangarh Fort.

Rising 122 metres above the city, this 15th-century fort dominates the skyline. Inside you’ll find intricately carved palaces, expansive courtyards, temples, and a museum displaying royal artefacts and elephant howdahs.

Allow at least 2 hours to explore properly.

Tip: Go earlier in the day to avoid the midday heat and the crowds.

Lunch: Rooftop Dining

After the fort, head to a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Blue City.

Afternoon: Jaswant Thada

Just a short drive from the fort is Jaswant Thada, a serene marble cenotaph built in 1899.

The thin Makrana marble sheets glow warmly in sunlight, and the surrounding gardens offer a peaceful contrast to the bustle of the old city.

Dinner: Try a Different Rooftop

Return to town for dinner in the old city. The sandstone glow of Mehrangarh at sunset is unforgettable — one of the simplest but best experiences in Jodhpur.

Day 2 in Jodhpur: Royal History & Hidden Corners

Morning: Markets & Fabric Shops

Spend your second morning exploring Jodhpur’s local bazaars. Away from the tourist stalls, you’ll find sari shops, spice vendors, and textile stores perfect for slow browsing.

If you enjoy cultural experiences, this is also a good time to meet the inspiring women behind the Spice Girls of Rajasthan. You could just buy spices, or you could book an amazing lunchtime cooking class.

Midday: Umaid Bhawan Palace & Museum

Head out to Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the world’s largest private residences, with 347 rooms.

Built between 1929 and 1943 in Indo-Saracenic style, it is now divided into:

  • A royal residence

  • A museum

  • A Taj luxury hotel

It famously hosted the wedding of Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas in 2018.

Afternoon: Mandore Gardens & Panchkunda Cenotaphs

Before Jodhpur was founded, Mandore was the capital of Marwar. Today, Mandore Gardens contains impressive cenotaphs dedicated to early Marwar rulers.

Nearby, the lesser-visited Panchkunda Cenotaphs offer a quieter and more atmospheric experience.

These are best visited by tuk-tuk or car.

Optional: Mayla Bag Ka Jhalra

If you still have energy, stop at Mayla Bag Ka Jhalra, another historic stepwell built in 1775 — less crowded and often overlooked.

Is 2 Days Enough for Jodhpur?

Yes — two days in Jodhpur is ideal.

You’ll have time to:

  • Explore Mehrangarh Fort properly

  • Wander the Blue City without rushing

  • Visit key monuments beyond the old town

  • Enjoy rooftop sunsets and market browsing

If you’re travelling through Rajasthan, Jodhpur works perfectly between Udaipur and Jaisalmer.
